A Letter to our Community:

We would like to update the community on our plans to build a residential neighborhood in downtown Gig Harbor. The development, known as One Harbor Point, is located at the corner of Soundview and Harborview and is being undertaken by the Ben B. Cheney Foundation, together with Neil Walter Company.

One Harbor Point strategically provides the transition connecting the adjacent residential neighborhoods of single- and multi-family residences to the downtown commercial district. We will work collaboratively with the City and its Planning & Building Committee and Design Review Board to come up with a superior design that harmoniously transitions between the two areas.

Over the past 18 months we participated in many meetings and outreach sessions with Gig Harbor citizens, neighbors, city representatives, and business groups to hear their ideas, suggestions and concerns and to answer their questions. On May 24, 2017, we held a voluntary open house at City Hall that included all the members of our design and engineering team. We were very pleased with the attendance of a cross-section of the community. We appreciated the support expressed for the project and the thoughtful comments and suggestions made by the public.

As a result of public input, this past week we submitted a revised Development Agreement application to the City of Gig Harbor that will come before the City Council on June 26.

Key revisions to One Harbor Point plans include:

  • All buildings will be no taller than 2 stories.
  • The number of units will be reduced from 35 to 29
  • The Green Turtle parcel and its marina will be removed from the development agreement.

Throughout the process we have kept in mind our reason for undertaking this project. The Ben B. Cheney Foundation makes grants to nonprofit organizations in communities where the Cheney Lumber Company once operated, including Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula. One Harbor Point will provide an ongoing source of funds to be used for those grants.

We believe One Harbor Point is aligned with the Gig Harbor Vision and reflects key downtown elements valued by residents. It will create a more vibrant downtown with a stronger connection to the water. Street and sidewalk improvements will add to safety and walkability. Views to the Harbor and Mount Rainier will be expanded. The Boat Barn (built in 1925), its pier, marina, and parking will be dedicated to the City for use as a community asset that will ensure permanent public waterfront access.
